Educational Programs: Powerful Choices for the EnvironmentPowerful Choices for the Environment
Powerful Choices for the Environment (formerly called In Concert with the Environment) is an environmental education program that is changing how Washington state's middle school students and their families think about and use natural resources in their daily lives. Environmental education professionals, trained in science education and local resource use, in cooperation with over 20 local partnering agencies, deliver this hands-on, four-day program. The program is designed to empower 6-8th grade students across the region with the knowledge that their everyday choices do make a difference.
Program highlights
- Students answer the question, "What are the connections between my personal choices and the health of the Puget Sound ecosystem?" through a series of hands-on, inquiry-based activities that focus on local air quality, waste reduction, and energy and water use.
- The curriculum helps students master Washington state Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR) in environmental education. (For details, please refer to EALR Requirements on the "Teacher's Corner" tab of this page.)
- Powerful Choices for the Environment reaches over 13,000 6-8th grade students from 70 different schools.
- Middle Schools in Puget Sound Energy's natural gas and/or electric service area in King, Snohomish, Thurston, Kittitas, Kitsap, Whatcom, Skagit, and Island Counties are eligible.
- PSE partners with over 20 utilities, cities, and agencies responsible for energy, water, and waste management programs including Seattle City Light, Snohomish County Public Works, and the City of Bellevue.
